Vaasi Theerave (Thevaram):
Thiruveezhimizhalai pathigam is a Thevaram song sung by Sambandar in the presence of Thirunavkkarasar at a place called 'Thiruveezhimizhalai' where there was a great famine and the two great saints begged Siva to give them immaculate pieces of gold so that it can be exchanged for grains to feed the hunger-stricken populace.
At the time of great famine, both Appar and Sambandar were graced by the Lord Siva so that each of them will be presented with a gold coin which they can in turn exchange for food grains to feed the people. It so happened that the coin given to Appar fetched more value through the traders than that of the child Saint Sambandar.
Even though both were pure gold pieces given by Siva himself. Sambandar was miffed by this and it was made known to him through both saints were close to Siva, Appar more than charity had also rendered physical service and toiled in the service of Siva, his devotees and went about with a spade cleaning all temple premises. This is known as “Kainkariyam” which is rendering bodily services and is considered even a step above Dhanam or plain charity. Due to this Kainkariyam of Appar, the coin had added value and fetched more in return than Sambandar's.
After all, Sambandar was a child Saint who was blessed with the ability to sing in praise of Siva. So where was the possibility for him to work physically like Appar. In this pathigam Sambandar asks these questions and requests Siva to give him coins equal to that of Appar’s Merit.
